“How 3 Stories Got Under the Skin of PZ Myers and the New Atheists.”

In 2011, Anthony published three of his short stories in a collection called “Mother Teresa, Antony Flew, and Richard Dawkins Go to Heaven.” To his surprise, the prominent ‘new atheist’ PZ Myers got a hold of the stories and ‘reviewed’ each of them in turn on his blog, heaping abuse and contempt on them and inspiring others to do the same, and even leading to physical threats on Anthony. Despite this, the stories served to raise a number of important issues in the minds of some people that the author would never have been able to connect with, otherwise. The stories were never intended to serve any higher purpose, but they have managed to do so anyway. In this session, Anthony will reflect on the short stories and the reaction they had, and apply them to the goals of this conference.

The series has been updated with two additional stories along with an introduction and some forewords. It is available digitally, only, through these retailers: Kindle | Nook | Smashwords. A free download is available for conference registrants.

A former junior and senior high school religion teacher and parish minister, he is now actively involved in Christian apologetics. ACM has a heavy emphasis on promoting the Christian world view and the Gospel through the arts and literature.

Anthony is the author of Birth Pangs series and Fidelis and Spero which are an example of literary apologetics, as they contain discussions and events that provide an opportunity to explore The Deep Things. His columns have also been posted to Worldnetdaily.com and his ministries have been featured on numerous national and local radio stations.

He is married and a father of four. Currently, he is pursuing his MA in Christian Philosophy and Apologetics. As of the summer of 2011, he is the president of Wisconsin Lutherans for Life. He is a member of the national speaker’s bureau for Lutherans for Life. He speaks often on pro-life and apologetics issues at schools, churches, and colleges.

Friday Session:

“Tim Gautreaux and the Apologetics of Real Life

Tim Gautreaux is a contemporary southern Catholic writer, with most stories focused near Mississippi and Louisiana. Most of his stories tells tales of that area’s exceedingly average — sometimes dirt poor — and rarely wealthy residents.

The two stories in this talk are “The Safe” and “Welding With Children.” Both are available online at The Atlantic Monthly:

“The Safe”

“Welding with Children”

Gautreaux has said that a story without a moral element isn’t interesting to him, and at different times in various ways he’s shown that these are also the kinds of characters he wants to tell about, as well. They’re like us, pressing on and facing choices, in common life and love that is often difficult and occasionally beautiful. Which fits perfectly what we’re doing here.

Saturday Session:

“5 by Flannery”

Mary Flannery O’Connor merely befuddles non-believers. They often don’t get it. But they get off easy, because O’Connor flat out freaks out fellow believers. She gives ‘em the willies. Strange things happen … and we don’t want to get it. About the only people we can be sure will get it from Flannery O’Connor are her characters. They get it every time. The question is … what do they do next? We’ll discuss what she’s doing to them and why, and what happens to her people and how they respond, in five key stories. They’re key because each of the five accounts represent a possible response, for all concerned. The five, in order, are “A View of the Woods,” “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” “An Enduring Chill,” “Parker’s Back,” and “Revelation.” Please be familiar with as many of these as possible. They are available online here, and in the print edition of O’Connor’s Complete Stories.

Paul Hughes is a writer in Southern California. He edited Think and Live for Apologetics.com, and prepared love every day from the work of a 13th century Roman Catholic Spanish mystic.
“Finding God in Fairy Tales”

Friday, April 20: 1 PM CST (11 AM PST)

Do stories with ogres, witches, evil stepmothers, and enchantments have any redeeming qualities for Christians? The answer is a firm yes. In fact, the traditional fairy (or folk) tales of the Brothers Grimm are nourishing, wholesome imaginative food, providing children (and adults) with a way to look at the world that is fundamentally Christian, as well as affirming a moral code that is completely in line with Christian morality.

In this talk, I will look at two classic fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, “Cinderella” and “Hansel and Gretel,” and discuss how they show Christian truth and encourage a Christian worldview.

Text of the stories:

Cinderella: http://www.grimmstories.com/en/grimm_fairy-tales/aschenputtel

“The Importance of Excellence in Christian Fiction: A Lesson from CS Lewis”

Saturday, April 21: 11 AM CST (9 AM PST)

Stories and poetry can be powerful ways to show the truth of the Christian faith — if they are truly good stories and good poetry. Too often, Christian writers settle for less than the best, wrapping a story around a Bible lesson or apologetics argument and thinking that’s good enough. However, Christians should have the highest standards of excellence for Christian literature, to give glory to God and to have the greatest power to draw people to the faith. C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia are highly respected as stories that have helped bring many to know Christ, so in this talk, I will explore Lewis’s thinking on artistry vs. apologetics, and show the way that the Chronicles are far more complex and well-crafted than many people realize

She holds a PhD in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, an MA in English Literature from UNC Chapel Hill, and an MA in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. She writes on the role of imagination and literature in apologetics, with special attention to the work of CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, and Charles Williams. She is the author of Not God’s Type: A Rational Academic Finds a Radical Faith, and the director of Athanatos Christian Ministry’s Literary Apologetics Certificate Program.
As Christians, we recognize that Truth is a universal constant. Thus, we can draw inspiration from unexpected secular works – as Paul Nowak has done with Chuck Palahniuk’s original short story “Fight Club” which became a cult classic novel and film. Paul will expound on the ideas of manhood, Christian life, and of course apologetics found in the violent story.

The short story, which includes graphic descriptions of violence, can be found in audio form on the author’s website: http://chuckpalahniuk.net/files/audio/bumbershoot_portland_fightclub_audioreading.mp3

This is ACM’s third annual online apologetics conference. Each year it gets bigger and bigger. We are pleased to find ways to continue to connect apologists and authors and Christians in general together. Unlike many other apologetics organizations, ACM believes that Christianity needs to mount a defense of the faith in our culture, and indeed, it is largely because Christians have abandoned the ‘field’ or retreated to the Christian ‘ghetto’ that unbelief in America and the West continues to spread.

The main body of this conference will therefore continue to emphasize our vision for ‘literary apologetics.’ However, there will always be a need for ‘straight apologetics,’ that is, the need for every Christian in every time and place to be ready to give a reason… a defense… for the hope in Christ that they have. This year, on the Thursday before the conference (Apr. 19th), we want to host a full day of discussions and presentations on the evidences and arguments for the Christian faith. If this is an area of passion and competency for you, then we would like to invite you to be one of our presenters!

Topic ideas: defense of the resurrection, the problem of pain, the historical Jesus, the NT canon, evolution/creation, Intelligent Design, etc.

Note that the sessions on this day will be completely free and open to the public. This is a change from last year when the Thursday sessions were only open to paid conference registrants. This change will allow for a much broader audience, in particular non-Christians, who otherwise would be uninterested in the conference.

Since we are not charging for access to those sessions, we regret that we cannot provide an honorarium for Thursday sessions, either. We will, however, give you complimentary access to the conference.

For more information about the conference please visit the main page. To be considered as a presenter, please use the form below. Deadline: April 1st, 2012 or when the schedule is full (approx 20-25 presenters). Please note that either 30 min or 50 min sessions may be available, and while you may state your preference, we reserve the right to make the final determination. You CAN pre-record the presentation (in mp3 or video in flv) but it is expected that you are present at minimum to field questions and answers for 10-15 minutes or so. Also, feel free to promote your website or book.

Thanks for your interest!

The 2012 Online Apologetics Conference is using short stories to show how story and narrative and communicate timeless truths, even to those most hardened to receive them. Most of our presenters will be taking a short story and examining it in light of contemporary issues in apologetics. The rubric below is a guide for the presenters themselves but will give conference presenters a glimpse into how the 2012 conference will play out.

The ‘first pass’ refers to the first reading of the story, where we first of all make sure we understand the story as the author intended it to be understood and identify possible areas of further analysis. The ‘second pass’ refers to a second reading, where we consider to what degree the story may speak to matters of substance and consider the story’s relevance to readers today- especially those readers interested in defending the faith through the arts.

———————

First Pass:

What is the story about?

What is the story’s primary themes?

Does the story have secondary themes that are worthy of note?

Does the story convey truth?

Does the story lie or mislead the reader about some aspect of reality?

Who is the author and is there anything in his historical context that might impact how we interpret the story or give weight to various themes, incidents, and characters?

Second Pass:

What truths/falsehoods does the story convey propositionally?

What truths/falsehoods does the story convey through intangibles, such as aethestics?

Is the author overtly, covertly, or unconsciously conveying these truths/falsehoods?

Can the narrator of the story be trusted?

What issues concerning human nature, God, Christianity, sin, etc, are raised by the story?

In what ways could the story be used to initiate conversations about these issues?

What would one have to learn more about in order to most effectively apply the story to contemporary issues in theology, philosophy, and apologetics?
